Via Marco, an Italian designer working in Istanbul and who is married to a Turkish designer, we got a glimpse of the production and sales of design furniture in Istanbul. Apart from the furniture cluster in the district Modoko on the Asian side, we visited some independent young designers and some of the high end shopkeepers on the European side. Why is orange such a popular color in Turkish design furniture? Why are all these furniture shops clustered together? Why are the shop spaces in Modoko all the same size? Why are doors being sold in a circle around Modoko? Why is there another circle that sells building materials? Where did the production move?
