Bazaars, modern malls and the experience economy
Kathy is an American journalist, personal shopper and textile expert who first began visiting Turkey in 1981 and moved here permanently in 1998. She writes weekly feature articles for one of the largest Turkish newspapers covering the latest in clothing design, travel, cuisine, and, of course, shopping in Istanbul. She knows the retail system and small producers workshops of the Grand Bazaar very well. She walked with the participants trough the bazaar and talked to producers just outside the bazaar in the old Hans – the old caravanserai’s. The next stop was a modern shopping mall called Cevahir, one of the biggest in Europe, where participants were asked to shop for a five euro meal and share their food and experience. After this part of the tour during a visit to post-modern shopping mall Istinye Park, we went into a Las Vegas version of an ‘old bazar’ build for rich local residents of Istanbul. The rich probably never visit the real bazars of their city because those are the territory for tourists and the lower and middle classes. Thus we came full circle, from the oldest clustering of retail in the world, via modern malls to the post-modern experience economy’s rendering of an old bazaar.
